Video Analysis

This is a 48seconds long extract from the film Spider-man (2002). The clip starts off with a medium close up of Tobey Maguire and you can see from the very start that they are stood in a graveyard. Tobey Maguire is dressed start, wearing a shirt and tie which makes the audience assume that they are at a funeral. The scene is set outdoor and the sunlight is being used as the key light, it seems as if the scene is made in the season of autumn and the time it is taken is about two or three o’clock in the afternoon.  While Tobey Maguire is speaking to Kirsten Dunst, there is non-diegetic sound which sets the mood of the scene which is sad and emotional. Once Tobey Maguire has finished speaking they show a close up of Kirsten Dunst, from her facial expression the audience recognize the fact she is upset and this assumption is proved correct when she begins to cry. As Tobey Maguire walks of, Kirsten Dunst’s facial expression suggest as if she has realised something, the music in the background then changes and there is a high angle shot of Tobey Maguire walking away. There is then more non-digetic sound as Tobey Maguire says a narrative of what he is thinking inside his head.

(WATCH) 04m:00 - 5m:25secs
The setting for this extract is in a room where 3 people have a conversation, their hairstyles and costumes are suitable for the time period this film was made, the camera shot always tends to stay in one position .The very 1st thing you can notice is the colour, Things to Come was made in 1936 where colour recording was not available therefore, it’s in black and white. The next thing that you notice is the sound, there is a lot of background sound which in modern day can be removed and the quality of sound is not very good, it actually began to hurt my ears. There is also use of very few lights and therefore, there are a case of major shadows behind the characters as the technology was not as advanced back then.
